Running Around Luxembourg

Its taken me a while to get around to writing this (lets just put it down to extreme fatigue!) but last weekend I ran (and completed I might add) the Luxembourg half marathon. Yes that’s right all 21.1km’s of it.

You’ll see two photos accompanying this blog entry. One taken towards the beginning of the race and the other less flattering shot taken during the last few kilometres. Despite letting my vanity get the better of me I decided it best to show both sides to prove it wasn’t just a walk in the park.

The Luxembourg half marathon is by no means the easiest choice of half marathons so to all those reading this and thinking they fancy giving it a go my advice would be..Stop think again! However, If you like running up hills then go for it. If you like a nice flat jog then keep looking. For me though its becoming a bit of a family tradition. I can think of better ways to bond with your other half’s family but this year I came first in our group so I enjoyed it immensely!

Anyway onto the details and the bit you really want to know. I finished in 1hr 47mins, a very respectable time I feel. A minute slower than last year but my theory is every year I age I drop a minute…that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Whilst I’m on the subject of physical exertion for ‘fun’. I thought this would be an opportune moment to plug the triathlon a few of us at Dylan are taking part in on the 1st July. Its an epic 750m swim, followed by a 20km bike ride and capped off with a gentle 5 km run.

There’s An App For That…

How about a mobile app dedicated entirely to recruiting new employees? Pepsi Co have one. Will other companies follow where they’ve paved the way?

Brands, Principles, Values and Morals…

Giggs is another star that has allegedly succumbed to temptation. A man famous for his “clean” image touted as a role model for the young and once even asked to keep an eye on Wayne Rooney after he strayed from the straight and narrow. The Media has jumped on this and is seems that there may be more to come.

Now the reason I am interested in this (other than gossip) is the concern of Sponsorship deals and how brands have to deal with the fall-out. Stars are big money for Brands. Looking at Giggs again, it is being suggested that he may lose his £20 million sponsorship deal with Reebok. (Marketing, June 2011)

The Daily Mail claims the brand would not comment when asked whether they would stand by him. Nigel Currie, Director of sports marketing firm Brand Rapport told the paper: “What he had going for him from a marketing perspective was his seemingly clean-cut personal image.”

He continued: “A little like Tiger Woods, he had this untouchable air about him, almost Mr Perfect – he was seen as a model professional and a really good guy…Once that image goes, he’s likely to find his whole unique selling point has gone, too.” (The Drum, June 2011)

Should Reebok drop him? They Sponsor him for being a brilliant Footballer/Athlete, someone kids want to be. Should they be concerned by his private life? Well it comes down to Morals and Values. Does Reebok want to be associated with someone that the Nation value as Immoral?

Augment Reality with… Reality.

A really fascinating glimpse into the future. Augmented Reality has ridiculous possibilities for all businesses. If linked to social networks, will we be able to point our phones at each other and see miniature profiles of each other, introduce ourselves online, connect etc? Whilst we’re at it, why bother cleaning the car, we can just see it clean through the glasses. Finally, with AR glasses in tow, you’ll be able to live beside that tropical beach, without leaving Brighton. How long before hovering transport beds and constant slush puppy supplies?

Talented@… Bowling?!

Bloomsbury Bowls was the venue and competition was definitely the name of the game. Despite my best efforts (god loves a trier right?) nothing went my way. Desperation tactics to distract my colleagues with booze even failed and I was left languishing at the gutter end of the points table.

I couldn’t have asked for a better start, maybe it’s because I didn’t care or that I had an inkling at the misery that lay ahead but to my surprise the first bowl was a strike! I won’t bore you with the rest of my attempts (largely because they were rubbish) but needless to say my downward spiral was a stark contrast to everyone else who seemed to get better and better. Someone won, I forget who, and we all left with varying degrees of dis/satisfaction with our attempts. Honourable mentions go to Sophie “bowls like a dude” Jammes, Seb “showboat” Haire & Lucie “bouncing bomb” Emma.

It was great to get the troops out of the office, the standard has been set and we’re all eagerly awaiting details of our next day out, which will be when the Social Sec has found a medium he can excel……pub?

Big Pimpin’

Wow, that is a lot of pimping…innit? It would seem pimping multiple agencies into one is popular stuff, Iris previously pimped all their departments into one Iris. Similarly with Publicis pimping their offering by acquiring Chemistry. Now with Tim Westwood’s backing surely integration will be going on everywhere…sorry, I mean pimping. Whether that is pimping agency’s departments into one offering (Iris) or big groups pimping new businesses into their fold (Chemistry-Publicis) I think we’ll be seeing more and more of this going forward.

The video is certainly tongue in cheek and as with most things Tim Westwood says and does I was a little bemused but it was a bit of fun. It does seem to have missed the mark with one You Tube user though who has uploaded the video with the rather uncomplimentary title “The worst advertising agency promotion ever”. I’d say that was rather harsh and one user who commented on the video sums up my feelings better by calling it ‘brilliantly bad’.
